As well as offering a number of specialist cardiology services to athletes, CRY also offers screening opportunities to the Public. These can be accessed through a variety of means.

CRY’S Mobile Screening Programme

CRY is able to book a mobile team of medically qualified personnel, who will visit sports clubs and other venues on request to screen young people between the ages of 14 – 35. Younger children can be included by special request, but ordinarily we can only see young people of 14 years and above. Please note that we cannot yet undertake screening or testing in state schools (except within Essex and Lewisham) because ethical approval needs to be gained from the local health authority and normally takes about 9 months to complete.

Our Screening Team consists of our cardiologist’s Dr. Sanjay Sharma and Dr Sandeep Basavarajaiah, an Echo Technician and a Screening Manager. Screenings are held over a weekend period, and the CRY office seeks 10 weeks notice from individuals wishing to run a CRY Mobile Screening weekend. We are able to screen any number of people as long as it is over 40!

Working in conjunction with CRY staff, the individual locates suitable premises for the screening event, a suitable hotel for our mobile team and work toward letting interested parties know of the event. All relevant paperwork and materials are supplied by CRY and the individuals work within the criteria designed and approved by CRY.

Clients who are invited to attend screenings will be required to sign a Consent Form and complete a Health Questionnaire, prior to the date of the screening. It must be emphasised that if a diagnosis of a cardiac condition is confirmed it may have implications with regard to Life Insurance and Mortgage Application for the individual, hence the need for a signed Consent form. For more information, please contact Steve Cox on 01737 363722

The mobile team will arrive the Friday evening before the start date to set up equipment on site. The site premises must be alarmed for security cover to be valid. The team, works from approximately 9.00 am on Saturday until 6.00 pm and from 10.00 am on Sunday until finished, usually 12.30pm.

After the date of the screening, the client’s ECG/ECHO, completed Health Questionnaire and consent form will be reviewed by two cardiologists. Any client who is border line or who MAY have a possible hidden heart condition will be invited to attend further testing at University Hospital Lewisham. Re-testing will be free but travel expenses will not be covered. In the event of a positive diagnosis, the client will be contacted and can either be seen at Lewisham or their local hospital via GP referral. If the GP does not consider it necessary for you to be screened you can have these tests done privately and the costs are normally a minimum of £450.

CRY’s Open ECG, ECHO and Cardiac Testing Dates

CRY also runs ‘testing open days’ usually held at the CRY Centre for Sports Cardiology or one of the other CRY centres around the country. If you are an individual or part of a small group of people who would like to be tested, this is the best method for you. You will need to contact the CRY CSC in advance in order to book your place for a screening. The cost of these screenings are £35 for an ECG, £175 for an ECHO or £200 for the complete screening. The screening process is exactly the same as a mobile screening except that you have to make your own way to the screening rather than CRY coming to you.
